8:00 AM Session 1: Foundations of Industrial Process Cooling System Design
Clayton Penhallegon Jr., P.E., Integrated Services Group
As the opening session in this four-part seminar, this presentation provides the essential foundation for understanding industrial process cooling systems. Attendees will learn the principles of operation for process chillers, cooling towers, fluid coolers, water-cooled machinery, and ancillary equipment; explore common applications for cooling water and chilled water; and review key performance indicators (KPIs) and fundamental design calculations to prepare for topics that will follow.
Exercise 1: Process Heat Load Profiles and Chiller Sizing
Clayton Penhallegon Jr., P.E., Integrated Services Group
Learn to evaluate a common industrial chilled water application then size and select the right process chiller.
8:45 AM Session 2: Oil-Free Air Compressor Cooling Water Systems
Ryan Schmidt, P.E., CEM, Mechanical Engineering Specialist, Chilled Water & Compressed Air Systems Specialist, 3M
Ryan Schmidt will present how water-cooled air compressor cooling water systems operate; compare oil-free vs oil-flood water cooled systems; compare dynamic vs. positive displacement compressor cooling systems; show evaporative closed-loop and dry cooler configurations; and evaluate impacts on reliability, energy and water usage.
Exercise 2: Create Your Compressor Cooling Water Standard Operating Procedure
Ryan Schmidt, P.E., 3M
Ryan Schmidt will provide an interactive control system walk-through, then help attendees complete an SOP worksheet, starting with specifying min/max air compressor entering and leaving cooling water temperatures; oil temps, cooler temps; tower temps; loop conditions, seasonal operation, and more.
9:30 AM Session 3: Chiller Bypass Conditions for Impactful Energy Savings
Troy Reineck, Business Development Manager and Professor, EVAPCO
Troy Reineck will present how an appropriately sized cooling tower or fluid cooler system can enable free-cooling energy savings. Attendees will gain the ability to identify criteria for free-cooling opportunity; specify a dry-bulb switch-over; and maximize a tower or fluid cooler’s thermal capacity.
Exercise 3: Capturing Maximum Free Cooling Potential
Troy Reineck, Business Development Manager and Professor, EVAPCO
Troy Reineck will present how an appropriately sized cooling tower or fluid cooler system can enable free-cooling energy savings. Attendees will gain the ability to identify criteria for free-cooling opportunities, specify a dry-bulb switch-over and maximize a tower or fluid cooler’s thermal capacity.
10:15 AM Session 4: Common Applications & Issues in Industrial Chiller Systems
Don Joyce, National Sales Manager, Industrial Water Chiller
Don Joyce will explore the design, operation and application of packaged industrial process chillers across a variety of manufacturing environments. Attendees will review chiller components, refrigerant compressor technologies, and chilled water flow profiles. Learn common applications including laser cutting, injection molding, food processing, MRI systems, laser printing, and more. The session will also cover different chilled water system configurations, including low-temperature glycol systems, along with practical considerations for system performance and reliability.
Exercise 4: Chiller Sizing and Achieving a Higher Chilled Water Setpoint
Don Joyce, National Sales Manager, Industrial Water Chiller
Gain repetition in process chiller sizing scenarios, and the ability to identify energy savings with higher temperature chilled water setpoints.
